The Indian film industry has yet another reason to celebrate as 'Remnants of Laughter', a thought-provoking documentary presented in the beautiful Malayalam language, has been chosen as the exclusive representative from India at the esteemed Heritales - International Heritage Film Festival 2024 in Portugal. In an engaging conversation with the visionary director, Arjun P.J., we delve into the depths of his passion and excitement surrounding his debut film, as he shares his unique perspective and experiences.

Q. The literal meaning of Porattu Nadakam is ‘Frolicsome Theatre’, What is your film Remnants of Laughter’ is about?

Arjun P J: The Word “Porattu” is used to convey over dramatic behavior in vernacular Malayalam, a language spoken in Kerala, India. Historically, this dance-drama art form called Porattu Nadakam is one of the strongest movements of resistance against the caste system that happened in rural Kerala. in earlier times, only the upper caste artists were allowed to perform in temples. Porattu Nadakam is performed outside temples, by artists belonging to the lower castes. The literal meaning of the word ‘Porattu’ is outcast, which is an apt description for this art form born out of caste-based deprivations.

Unlike the traditional temple performances that were exclusive to upper caste artists, Porattu Nadakam emerged as a form of artistic expression for those marginalized by the caste system. The very essence of the word "Porattu," meaning outcast, perfectly encapsulates the essence of this art form that defied societal norms and paved the way for inclusivity and social change.

Q. What are the cultural or heritage importance of the film with international audience?

Arjun P J: The aim of the documentary ‘Remnants of Laughter’ is to bring the pain and effort which goes into keeping this art form alive. It was a matter of huge delight that the film was selected to be screened at Heritales - International Heritage Film Festival at Portugal and a recognition to all who worked on and off screen to make this film.

The documentary 'Remnants of Laughter' has a clear goal of showcasing the dedication and hard work required to preserve the art form it focuses on. It was truly a wonderful moment when the film was chosen to be featured at the prestigious Heritales - International Heritage Film Festival in Portugal, serving as a well-deserved acknowledgment of the collaborative efforts of everyone involved in bringing this project to life.

Since Porattu Nadakam is a local art form of Rural Palakkad, the research and preparations required us to live there for a period of time. We travelled across various venues with the troupes, experiencing their lives, joys and sorrows. This experience resulted in giving me a deeper understanding of the art form

Q. What are the challenges you faced during the making of the film?

Arjun P J: While preparing for the documentary, I wished for the audience to experience the viewing of this 14-hour art form within the framework of my one-hour film. This art form is localized to subaltern rural Kerala. The temple authorities and people belonging to upper caste seldom attend the performances. The filming had a tight schedule in real locations and therefore depended on the timing of the performances. The restrictions meant that we had to work without many of our equipments. Being prepared helped us to finish the film within the schedule. Our cinematographer Alex worked beyond our expectations to make this film a visual treat.

Q. What is, according to you, the key attraction of the theme?

Arjun P J: Porattu Nadakam involves folk music, dances, humorous skits and instruments. It has its own rhythm. The documentary moves in tune with this, matching the pace of the songs, dialogues and even the silence in the real lives of the artists. our editor, Sachin Sundar had done an exceptional job of giving these scattered rhythms a form.
